The Presidents of the United States of America
Each president recites the following oath, in accordance with Article II, Section I of the U.S. Constitution:"I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.
[ 1 ] George Washington : Served from April 30, 1789 to March 3, 1797
Born: February 22, 1732, in Westmoreland County, Virginia Died: December 14, 1799, at Mount Vernon, Virginia
Nicknamed The Father of His Country, George Washington was the first president of the United States and served two terms.
He was a member of the Continental Congress (1774-75 ) and Chairman of the Constitutional Convention( 1787-88 ).

Born: October 30, 1735, in Braintree (now Quincy), Massachusetts Died: July 4, 1826, in Braintree (now Quincy), Massachusetts
Nicknamed the "Atlas of Independence" Was called the "Collossus of Independence" by Thomas Jefferson, John Adams was the first vice-president (1789-97) and the second president (1797-1801) of the United States;John Adams was a founder of the United States, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. Father of the sixth President, John Quincy Adams
[ 3 ] Thomas Jefferson : Served from March 4, 1801 to March 3, 1809
Born: April 13, 1743, in Shadwell, Virginia Died: July 4, 1826, at Monticello,Virginia
Nicknamed "Man of the People"; "Sage of Monticello" Thomas Jefferson was a Member of the Continental Congress in 1775-76 & from 1783-85 , the secretary of state under George Washington and vice-president under John Adams.
His greatest personal achievement may well be as author of the Declaration of Independence.

Born: March 16, 1751, in Port Conway, Virginia Died: June 28, 1836, at Montpelier, Virginia
nicknamed "The father of the Constitution Madison was President during the war of 1812, in 1814 as the british invaded Washington he and wife Dolly evacuted theWhite house, the British set the House afire.
[ 5 ] James Monroe : Served from March 4, 1817 to March 3, 1825
Born: April 28, 1758, in Westmoreland County, Virginia Died: July 4, 1831, in New York, New York
Monroe was a Member of the Continental Congress, 1783-86
[ 6 ] John Quincy Adams : served from March 4, 1825 to March 3, 1829
Born: July 11, 1767, in Braintree (now Quincy), Massachusetts Died: February 23, 1848, in Washington, D.C
John Quincy Adams argued the case of the United States, Appellants, vs. Cinque, and others, Africans, captured in the schooner Amistad, by Lieut. Gedney Before the Supreme Court of the United States on the 24th of February and 1st of March 1841.
[ 7 ] Andrew Jackson : served from March 4, 1829 to March 3, 1837
Born: March 15, 1767, in Waxhaw, South Carolina Died: June 8, 1845, at the Hermitage in Nashville, Tennessee
Nicknamed "Old Hickory", In March of 1836,The Mexican Army numbering 6000 defeated 190 Americans at the Alamo in Texas.
[ 8 ] Martin Van Buren : served from March 4, 1837 to March 3, 1841
Born: December 5, 1782, in Kinderhook, New York Died: July 24, 1862, in Kinderhook, New York
Nicknamed "The Little Magician" and "The Red Fox of Kinderhook"
The Panic of 1837, on May 10 banks closed in Philadelphia and New York City . This was the beginning of a depression that followed lasted throughout Van Buren's term.
In 1838 Thousands of Indians were forced from their homes and died on the Trail of Tears.
[ 9 ] William Henry Harrison : served from March 4, 1841 to April 4, 1841
Born: February 9, 1773, in Berkeley, Virginia Died: April 4, 1841, in Washington, D.C.
On an very cold day Harrison delivered the longest inaugural address (105 minutes) .He contracted pneumonia and died in the White House one month later on March 4, 1841
[ 10 ] John Tyler : Following the death of Harrison, Tyler served from April 6, 1841 to March 3, 1845
Born: March 29, 1790, in Greenway, Virginia Died: January 18, 1862, in Richmond, Virginia
Was nicknamed the : "Accidental President"; "His Accidency"
[ 11 ] James Knox Polk: Served from March 4, 1845 to March 3, 1849
Born: November 2, 1795, in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina Died: June 15, 1849, in Nashville, Tennessee
[ 12 ] Zachary Taylor : Served from March 5, 1849 to July 9, 1850
Born: November 24, 1784, near Barboursville, Virginia Died: July 9, 1850, in Washington, D.C.
[ 13 ] Millard Fillmore : Following the death of Taylor Fillmore sreved from July 9, 1850 to March 3, 1853
Born: January 7, 1800, in Locke Township (now Summerhill), New York Died: March 8, 1874 in Buffalo, New York
[ 14 ] Franklin Pierce :served from March 4, 1853 to March 3, 1857
Born: November 23, 1804, in Hillsborough (now Hillsboro), New Hampshire Died: October 8, 1869, in Concord, New Hampshire
[ 15 ] James Buchanan: served from March 4, 1857 to March 3, 1861
Born: April 23, 1791, in Cove Gap (near Mercersburg), Pennsylvania Died: June 1, 1868, at Wheatland (near Lancaster, Pennsylvania)
[ 16 ] Abraham Lincoln served from March 4, 1861 to April 15, 1865
Born: February 12, 1809, in Hardin (now Larue) County, Kentucky Died: April 15, 1865, at Petersen's Boarding House in Washington, D.C.
Nicknamed "Honest Abe"; "Illinois Rail-Splitter" , Abraham Lincoln was the first president to be born outside of the original thirteen colonies. Abraham Lincoln was shot while watching a performance of "Our American Cousin" at Ford's Theatre in Washington, D.C. he became the first President to be assassinated as John Wilkes Boothe killed him on April 14, 1865.
